Job Description

Assistant teaching or substituting with us is an entre' to landing a full-time lead teaching position.

We add a grade level and hire approximately 10 new lead teachers each year. School leaders use assistant teaching and permanent subs as an opportunity to see potential lead teacher hires in action. They observe assistant teachers and subs in the classroom and include assistant teachers and subs in teacher professional development initiatives, significantly advancing an assistant teacher's prospects for being hired as a full-time lead teacher. (Indeed, each year several formerly assistant teachers and/or subs have been promoted to a lead teacher position.)

Given the above, assistant teachers and subs are generally expected to have the capacity to pick-up a lesson plan and deliver first-rate instruction if a teacher is out so that the learning progress of our students will not miss a beat.

If you believe you are ready to lead a classroom and are looking for an opportunity where you can showcase your high-level skills and land a full-time position, you should apply for this position.

Assistant Teacher Responsibilities

Values, Expectations, and Commitment Assistant Teachers must commit themselves to the school's values and mission. Moreover, appreciating the example of excellent schools which succeed at helping all students achieve at a high level, Assistant Teachers must hold high expectations for each student and commit themselves to helping every student achieve their full potential.

Teaching and Assessment Assistant Teachers will assist our educators as they work to execute the school's education and character development programs. They will assist with assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities; will provide student support; and will often be asked to teach a small group of students or even an entire class. In addition, they will assist with student arrival and breakfast in the morning, with lunch, and with student dismissal in the afternoon.

Culture and Classroom Management Assistant Teachers must communicate, and also model for their students, behaviors which befit the high expectations culture and the caring school climate to which we are committed. Under the guidance of the teacher they are assisting, they must apply School and classroom rules consistently and effectively; make use of preventive discipline; and effectively supervise students both in their classroom and elsewhere on School grounds.

Teamwork, Professional Relations, and Professional Development Assistant Teachers should see themselves as members of a team and should commit themselves to their own and to their peers' on-going professional development. Assistant Teachers may be required to attend professional development sessions and to participate actively in school meetings. To improve their instructional skills and classroom management, they may also be asked to observe master teachers and meet with teaching coaches to gain feedback on their lessons and pedagogy.

Teacher Supports

Teachers are part of a school-wide team that includes many different professionals and they receive career-long coaching and professional development support from their Academy Dean and Dean of Students, their Grade Level or Department Head, and our Coordinator of Special Education.

Teachers work closely with their grade level peers, with whom they engage within professional learning communities (PLCs) assisting one another to solve problems.

Additional teacher supports include:

  • A research-based curriculum and supporting curricular materials (you will have the freedom to develop your own, but after a full day in the classroom, you may appreciate not always having to develop learning objectives and curricular resources from scratch);
  • High-quality formative assessments, aligned with our curriculum, that will help you immediately identify when students in your class have not achieved mastery of a skill, concept, or knowledge item;
  • Full-time reading and math specialists who will be available to tutor students who are struggling to master an essential skill, and social workers who will be available to help students struggling with outside problems;
  • The staffing of our afterschool program by Academic Tutors, so we can limit the length of our teachers' work-days;
  • Abundant planning periods that provide teachers an opportunity to prepare up-coming lessons during the school day.

    Requirements

    We generally seek the same qualities in assistant teachers and permanent subs that we seek in lead teachers.

    Therefore, assistant teacher and sub candidates should hold of a certificate of eligibility for teaching in elementary school grades. (Exceptions may be made.)
