Job Description Job Description SUMMARY: Under the direction of
the Recreation Coordinator and/or Camp Director/Site Supervisors, a
camp counselor is responsible for providing an appropriately safe,
caring, and enriching environment for the campers enrolled in Camp
Black Rock, the Upper Providence Township summer camp program.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING: Candidates should be outgoing,
energetic, creative, and organized. They need to be caring,
enthusiastic, and have the campers' best interests in mind.
Ideally, they have experience working with children. Candidates
should have a strong understanding of customer service and should
be committed to working the entire summer. This is the perfect job
for students or teachers who need a fun summer job with guaranteed
40 hours a week and evening/weekends off! Counselors will start
June 12 for paid mandatory orientation. The camp runs Monday -
Friday, June 15-July 31, excluding the week of June 29-July 3.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision & Safety: Monitor Campers:
Always ensure the safety and well-being of all campers, both
indoors and outdoors, while presenting as positive role model
through all interactions. Headcounts & Attendance: Regularly take
headcounts during activities, transitions, and at the beginning/end
of the day to ensure no camper is left behind, especially important
on trip days. Emergency Preparedness: Be aware of emergency
procedures and follow protocols in case of accidents or incidents.
Know where first aid kits are and how to respond in emergencies.
Behavior Management: Maintain a positive and safe environment by
enforcing camp rules, managing camper behavior, and providing
redirection when necessary. Activity Leadership & Engagement:
Participate In Activities: Participate with campers in a variety of
camp activities such as games, arts and crafts, sports, nature
hikes, and themed events. Adapt Activities: Modify activities to
suit the needs and interests of the campers, ensuring everyone is
engaged and having fun. Encourage Participation: Motivate campers
to try new activities and participate fully, fostering an inclusive
and supportive environment. Camper Support & Relationship Building:
Build Rapport: Establish a positive, trusting relationship with
campers. Provide emotional support, be a good listener, and be
approachable. Individual Attention: Pay attention to campers'
emotional, social, and physical needs. Identify campers who might
need extra support or encouragement. Provide Guidance: Offer
guidance and mentorship, helping campers navigate group dynamics,
resolve conflicts, and build new skills. Communication: Daily
Check-ins: Maintain open communication with camp leadership and
fellow staff members, sharing information about camper behavior,
needs, or any concerns. Ability to provide updates to parents and
answer questions about camp. Camp Director Communication: Report
any serious issues, accidents, or incidents to the Camp Director
and Site Supervisors, or the Recreation Coordinator when
appropriate. Camper Supervision During Transitions: Transitioning
Between Activities: Supervise campers as they transition between
activities, ensuring that all campers are accounted for and
following camp rules. Lunch & Snack Breaks: Supervise campers
during lunch and snack breaks, ensuring they follow camp
guidelines, maintain proper hygiene, and clean up at end of breaks.
Dropoff/Pickup: Occasionally assist with morning drop-off or
afternoon pick-up procedures to ensure a smooth and safe process.
Cleanliness & Organization: Maintain Camp Areas: Keep activity
areas clean and organized. Make sure campers clean up after
themselves and encourage responsibility. Activity Prep: Prepare
materials for the day's activities and ensure that all supplies and
equipment are ready before activities begin. Lost & Found: Help
manage the lost and found, ensuring that misplaced items are
returned to campers. Support Camp Events & Special Days: Camp
Spirit: Promote camp spirit by participating in camp-wide events,
team-building activities, and maintaining enthusiasm throughout the
camp day. Professional Development & Teamwork: Training & Meetings:
Attend staff training sessions, daily or weekly meetings, and
ongoing professional development activities. Team Collaboration:
Work closely with other counselors, camp leadership, and staff to
ensure that the camp runs smoothly and campers have the best
possible experience. Feedback & Improvement: Be open to receiving
feedback and take initiative to improve your skills and the camp
experience. Skills & Qualities of a Great Camp Counselor: Patience
& Flexibility: Ability to stay calm and flexible in a dynamic,
often unpredictable environment. Communication Skills: Strong
verbal communication to interact with campers, parents, and staff.
Leadership & Initiative: A natural leader who can guide and engage
campers while managing activities and behavior. Positive Attitude:
Always maintain a fun, positive attitude that motivates and
encourages campers. Problem-Solving Skills: Quick thinking and the
ability to handle unexpected situations, conflicts, or emergencies.
Physical Demands and Environmental Considerations: Counselors are
often on their feet for long periods, leading outdoor activities,
running games, and supervising campers during transitions. The job
may require bending, kneeling, and reaching items off floor and
shelves, lifting materials, sports equipment, and assisting with
campers' physical needs. Ability to lift and/or carry up to 35
pounds in equipment or supplies. Physically able to participate in
active games throughout the day. Able to demonstrate and
participate in activities like games, singing, dancing, sports, and
arts/crafts. Able to sit on the floor or stand for sustained
periods of time while interacting and playing games with the
children. Able to go to the pool or playground area and supervise
children in the area. Employees will be required to work outside
during various weather conditions, particularly during hot
temperatures. Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years of age by
June 11th, 2026. Ability and enthusiasm towards working with young
children. Excellent role model for children with high moral
standards. Outstanding character and integrity. Childcare: 1 year
(Preferred). Schedule: Monday to Friday: shifts are 7:45am-3:45pm,
or 8am-4pm, excluding trip days (4:30 or 5:00pm). Mandatory staff
orientation June 12th. Camp runs June 15th - July 31st. There is no
camp the week of June 29th - July 3rd. Must be available for all
six weeks. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Candidates with experience
working with children are given preference. Up to date Pennsylvania
Background Check, FBI Fingerprint Clearance, and PA Child Abuse
Clearance. CPR/First Aid (employer will provide an opportunity for
training or must schedule training on own time). The above is
