North American Domestic Transportation Director

We are currently looking for a North American Domestic Transportation Director, to join our team. Location can be flexible, preferred locations location would be Jersey City, NJ, Richmond, CA, Chicago, IL, Richmond, VA or Houston, TX.
Direct logistics activities throughout the NAM Metal Business via the execution of an effective strategy that adopts agreed global standards and best practice logistics methodology in the collection, and dispatch of ferrous and non-ferrous material in an efficient, safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner that meets or exceeds customer expectations, sales diversity objectives, and broader country strategy.
Principal Accountabilities:
Country Logistics Strategy

  • Devise and execute strategies that ensure the profitable and cost-efficient and safe transportation of material in accordance with company standards and requirements
  • Evaluate/design structure of transportation management system and drive future implementation; define business requirements and collaborate with technical systems team to ensure an efficient setup
  • Identify issues that impact the effectiveness of the transport function at the national and regional level and develop and implement solutions to address any root cause in line with broader operational strategy
  • Develop forward planning strategies together with Regional Operations to balance in-house fleet and 3PLs to ensure the availability of trucks for anticipated volume growth
  • Deliver KPIs to monitor the quality, cost, and efficiency of the movement and storage of goods and analyze data to monitor performance and plan improvements; this will depend on the successful implementation of a transportation management system
  • Develop and implement regional logistics cost management strategies and identify initiatives that align with company requirements
    Country Risk, Compliance, and Maintenance
    • Work with country and regional operations teams to ensure safe and compliant
    • domestic transportation of material in line with company requirements and country
    • regulations
    • Develop policies and ensure that maintenance, driver compliance, waste transport, and
    • other safety standards are effectively implemented
    • Ensure that regional routine and preventative maintenance programs are implemented for
    • transport assets in accordance with company requirements (including rail cars)
    • Develop and oversee maintenance strategies and standards with regard to specifications
    • and branding for bins at a national level
    • Support operations teams country-wide with the selection, negotiation, and management
    • of contractors and third-party service providers (including logistics related
    • to waste and landfill contractors)Training and Development
      • Develop training plans and material at the national level and oversee training for in-house
      • truck drivers, dispatch and maintenance personnel
      • Support operations teams to recruit and develop the regional Logistics teams and
      • allocate and manage staff resources according to changing requirements
      • Support succession planning and talent development within-country logistics function
      • Support the broader recruitment plan for cadets/graduate trainees for logistics-focused
      • roles
      • Demonstrate personal responsibility for, and promote a culture of proactive compliance
      • with, all Safety, Health, Environment, Community, and Sustainability (SHECS)
      • policies, procedures, and initiatives within sub-region or regional function
      • with multiple teams
      • Promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, positive employee relations, and
      • teamwork, and ensure standards of fairness and equality are maintained within
      • sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
      • Set and approve budgets (including Capex) and manage costs by implementing a system
      • of control and approvals in line with Company strategy, budgetary requirements,
      • and financial policies and procedures for sub-region or regional function with
      • multiple teams
      • Work with Country Non-Trade Procurement teams to define select fixed plant and
      • contractual services and provide approval for purchase requisitions at the
      • appropriate spend level as defined by global and regional policies
      • Support, Recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives and foster
      • compliance with quality requirements in accordance with a regional or global
      • functional strategy
      • Support and ensure compliance with all Company policies, procedures, and initiatives
      • within sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
      • Devise workforce strategies to build capabilities, instill high performance, and promote
      • career development in line with succession-planning initiatives for sub-region
      • or regional function with multiple teams
        Experience Required
        • Degree in Business, Operations, Logistics, or related field preferred
        • 8-10 years of experience, preferably in manufacturing, mining, energy or industrial
        • consulting
        • 5+ years of leadership experience in an operational role
        • Logistics background, preferably in industrial goods, mining, or energy company
        • Knowledge of the Metals Industry is highly preferred
