We work hard together—and with our clients—to deliver high-quality projects that are on time, on budget and beyond expectations.The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:Assists signal maintainer in the maintenance, repair, and construction of signal equipment such as wayside signal, crossing equipment, electric switch machines, and may be required to perform work such as digging, trenching, painting, wiring, and cable work, operating as a member of a work gang.Assists in testing of signal equipment, switch obstruction, batteries, ground readings, track circuits, grade crossings, locking points, and records findings in accordance with procedures MW-20 and MW-21. Conducts signal equipment tests and records results under Supervision oversight.Responds to signal failures, answers trouble calls for signal failures and reports to signal maintainer.Participates in the planning & scheduling for the maintenance and testing of signal equipment. Understands HBLR physical characteristics.Obtains all tools and material necessary for completion of work and ensures they are properly inventoried and maintained.Assist in marking out where cables are located; installation of new movement ties; switch inspections; surfacing; and to provide generators for power outage.Performs carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks as needed including pipefitting, and low voltage electrical work under supervision.Assists during emergencies to restore service.Works within the guidelines of the System Safety program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations and when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment.Attends safety briefings, assures safety compliance, maintains qualifications [Book Of Rules] and coordinates with other departments.Flagging protection. Must be qualified to flag after 3 months from date of hire.Perform other duties as assigned.Must successfully complete the MW-20 and MW-21 exam when responsible for Signal Maintainer duties.Physical/Work requirements:Outside exposure to all weather conditions including wind, extreme cold and heat on or in close proximity to railroad tracks, highways & waterways.Must be agile and implement safe practices to preclude slips, trips, and falls when working around track, switches, ballast, uneven surfaces and loose material in day, night or portable lighting conditions.Climbs and performs duties on ladders, scaffolds, bucket trucks, scissor lifts at heights above 30 feet. Must be able to carry 25lb or heavier tool bags.Works on bridges [ heights ], in tunnels, signal towers, at 35 feet or above, and on high speed tracks.Must be able to handle strenuous walks along uneven surfacesMust have good visual acuity, including ability to distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision plus normal night vision.Must have acute hearing, with the ability to distinguish and separate sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools, voices near and at a distance.Demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads.All internal candidates interested in applying must have a clean discipline record for the previous year (from 3/03/2020 to 3/03/2021). Internal craft candidates interested in applying must have completed the probationary period, if applicable, for the position they currently maintain as specified in the agreement between Shimick and TWU Local 229.Minimum Qualifications:High School diploma or educational equivalency (GED) required.Must possess basic knowledge and understanding in electricity with preference toward those who have achieved electrical/electronic training through an accredited program.Must posses a valid driver’s license with no moving violations or suspensions within the last 3 years.Candidate will be required to learn in a timely manner and be able to implement the rules and regulations for signal technician helpers consistent with the requirements of site instructions, MW-20 and MW-21, for maintaining and testing signal systems and associated apparatus.Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and ability to function under stressful situations.Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writingMust be able to perform field tests, document and/or communicate results to Supervision clearly.This position will require signal technician helper to work nights, holidays, and overtime. During flagging protection, signal technician helper must be able to stand and perform duties over long periods of time.Additional Information:Relocation and per diem support are not available for this position.Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be able to legally drive a motor vehicle with a 3 year clean driving record.This position does not include sponsorship for Unites States work authorization.Selected candidates must successfully complete and pass Drug and Alcohol Testing, Agility Testing and Background Screening before starting.Internal candidates interested in applying must have completed the probationary period, if applicable, for the position they currently maintain as specified in the agreement between Shimmick and the TWU Local 229.
